Marco Island is the southernmost city in Collier County. Marco Island is the largest barrier island in the state of Florida. The development of the area has been rapid, the population increasing four fold in the last 30 years. The Marriot and Hilton Hotel chains have erected major resort properties on the island. Marriot is developing large condominium resorts nearby. Marco Island is relatively self contained due to a 45 minute commute to Naples, the closest metropolitan location.
The hotel resorts are proactive in attracting conventions and business expos year round. The location and remoteness of the island builds a sense of camaraderie among the island visitors.
